Code Compliance
Ensuring a Clean and Safe Community
The Code Compliance Division is a vital component of the Farmington Police Department’s commitment to community wellness. We believe that a clean, well-maintained city is a safer city. By enforcing the Farmington Municipal Code, our team works to eliminate blight, protect property values, and ensure a high quality of life for all residents.
A Collaborative Team Approach
The unit is supervised by a Code Compliance Corporal and staffed by four Code Compliance Officers. Unlike traditional patrol beats, our officers work collaboratively across the entire city. This team-based approach allows the unit to be flexible—responding to community-wide trends and tackling larger neighborhood revitalization projects with a unified effort.
Education First
Our philosophy is centered on voluntary compliance. We recognize that many code violations occur simply because a resident may be unaware of a specific ordinance. Our officers prioritize education, often starting the process with a conversation or a courtesy notice to inform the property owner of the issue. Our goal is to work with you to resolve concerns before formal enforcement becomes necessary.
Top Community Priorities
While our officers enforce a wide range of municipal codes, they focus heavily on these five areas to maintain Farmington's appearance and safety:
- Weeds and Overgrowth: Managing excessive weeds and tall grass that can become fire hazards or breeding grounds for pests.
- Trash and Debris: Addressing the accumulation of household trash, scrap metal, or litter on private property.
- Abandoned or Inoperable Vehicles: Identifying vehicles that are dismantled, wrecked, or left inoperable on residential lots.
- Zoning Violations: Ensuring that properties are utilized according to their designated city zoning and land-use regulations.
- Substandard Housing & Health Hazards: Identifying conditions that pose an immediate threat to the health, welfare, or safety of the occupants or the public.
