Student Internships & Community Learning

The Farmington Police Department is proud to invest in the next generation of professionals by offering immersive learning opportunities. Whether you are a high school student fulfilling a senior project or a college student seeking academic credit, our programs provide a unique "behind-the-scenes" look at the various divisions that make up a modern law enforcement agency.

Shadowing & Rotational Learning

Our programs are designed to be comprehensive. Participants don’t just stay in one office; they have the opportunity to shadow various divisions throughout the department. This rotational approach provides a well-rounded understanding of how Patrol, Investigations, Records, and Support Services work together to serve the City of Farmington.

High School Senior Projects

We support local high school students as they complete their graduation requirements. Our department provides the environment for students to gain primary research and professional insights for their capstone projects.

  • Requirements: All project-specific requirements, hours, and academic goals are determined by the student’s high school.

College Internships

FPD offers unpaid, for-credit internships for students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university. These internships are ideal for those pursuing degrees in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, Public Administration, or related fields.

  • Academic Credit: We work with your educational institution to ensure your shadowing hours and experiences meet the criteria for your degree program.

Community Learning

For residents or students involved in specialized community programs, we offer limited learning opportunities to observe department operations. These sessions are intended to increase transparency and provide a deeper understanding of our mission and values.
