Community Ambassadors for Safety and Support

The Farmington Police Department Park Ranger Unit serves as the premier "eyes and ears" for our city’s outdoor and communal spaces. While the Park Rangers are not state-certified sworn law enforcement officers, they are granted limited special police powers to enforce specific municipal ordinances. You can easily spot them in their high-visibility yellow uniforms, providing a constant, reassuring presence in our parks, recreational areas, and downtown corridors.

Service-Oriented Safety

Service and friendliness are the hallmarks of the Park Ranger Unit. They act as city ambassadors, serving as a primary resource for both residents and visitors who are enjoying Farmington’s amenities. Whether they are patrolling in vehicles, on foot, on bicycles, or by UTV, our Rangers are there to answer questions, provide directions, and ensure that our public spaces remain welcoming for everyone.

Promoting Order in Public Spaces

To ensure our parks and downtown areas remain safe and family-friendly, Park Rangers have the authority to issue trespass warnings and citations for public nuisance-type crimes. This includes the enforcement of ordinances related to alcohol possession, loitering, disorderly conduct, and panhandling. By addressing these quality-of-life issues during their daylight patrols, the Rangers help maintain the high standard of safety that makes our city's recreational areas so popular.

A Vital Link to Law Enforcement

The Park Ranger Unit is fully integrated into the department’s communication network, utilizing the same radio system as our sworn police officers. This allows them to provide seamless support during the many civic events they attend throughout the year. While they focus on service and municipal enforcement, they are trained to identify more serious criminal activity and coordinate immediately with sworn officers for assistance, ensuring a rapid and comprehensive response to any incident.
