Request For a Ride Along

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Farmington Police Department Ride-Along Program provides civilians with a firsthand look at law enforcement operations. This program is designed as an educational experience, offering insight into the daily responsibilities of police officers—not for entertainment purposes.
The Ride-Along Program allows approved participants to observe officers during their shift and gain a better understanding of policing in our community.
Participants must:
Be at least 18 years old, exceptions may be made with written approval from the Chief of Police or their designee.
Who May Participate
The following individuals may be eligible for a ride-along:
- Community members with a clear purpose for their request
- Individuals interested in a career in law enforcement
- Participants in department programs such as:
- Citizens Academy
- Women Against Crime
- Police Explorer Post
- Volunteer Observation Patrol
- Government officials
- Officers or dispatchers from other agencies
- Family members or friends of department personnel
- Others deemed eligible by the department
Participation is subject to department guidelines. Failure to follow requirements may result in suspension of ride-along privileges.
Request Process
To participate in the Ride-Along Program:
- Complete a Ride-Along Request Form
- Submit the form to a Shift Lieutenant at least five days in advance
- Requests are approved or denied by the Shift Lieutenant
- Once reviewed, a Shift Supervisor will schedule the ride-along or provide a reason for denial
Short-notice requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Waiver & Approval Requirements
All participants must sign a waiver of liability prior to participation.
- Individuals under 18 (if approved) must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian
- Explorer Post members must have a parental waiver on file, valid for one year
- New waivers must be submitted annually
Explorer ride-alongs are coordinated through the Explorer Adviser, who:
- Acts as a liaison with officers
- Confirms officer availability
- May deny requests for reasonable cause
