Special Operations Unit

SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics)

The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team is the Farmington Police Department’s premier tactical response unit. Tasked with managing the most volatile and high-risk situations in our community, the SWAT team provides specialized skills, advanced equipment, and strategic discipline beyond the scope of standard patrol operations.

Our mission is centered on the preservation of life. Every deployment is approached with the goal of achieving a peaceful resolution through superior training, tactical precision, and de-escalation.

A Collateral Duty Elite

The SWAT team is a "part-time" unit composed of dedicated officers and detectives who maintain full-time roles in other divisions, such as Patrol or Investigations. These members are on-call 24/7, ready to transition from their daily duties to a high-stakes tactical environment at a moment’s notice.

Selection for the team is highly competitive, requiring candidates to pass rigorous physical, mental, and tactical evaluations. Once appointed, SWAT operators undergo continuous, specialized training to maintain peak operational readiness.

Operational Responsibilities

The SWAT team is primarily responsible for high-risk operations within the City of Farmington. However, we maintain strong partnerships with neighboring agencies, providing collateral support and mutual aid to regional tactical teams when requested.

Common mission types include:

  • High-Risk Warrant Service: Executing search and arrest warrants for violent offenders where there is a high potential for armed confrontation.
  • Barricaded Subjects: Utilizing specialized tactics and equipment to resolve standoffs safely.
  • Dignitary Protection: Providing secure transit and overwatch for visiting high-profile officials.
  • Major Event Security: Ensuring the safety of the public during large-scale community gatherings and high-visibility events.

Advanced Capabilities & Technology

To ensure the safety of our officers and the public, the SWAT team utilizes a variety of specialized tools and "force-multiplier" technology. These assets allow the team to gather intelligence and resolve threats while minimizing the need for direct physical confrontation.

  • Specialized Vehicles: The team utilizes Lenco BearCats (armored rescue vehicles) to provide ballistic protection for officers and to safely evacuate citizens from "hot zones."
  • Aviation & Robotics: Integration of unmanned aerial systems (drones) and tactical robots to scout dangerous environments and provide real-time thermal imaging and video feeds.
  • Breaching Equipment: Utilizing specialized manual, mechanical, and thermal breaching tools to gain safe and rapid entry to secured locations.
  • Specialized Training: While every member is a tactical generalist, the team trains heavily in sub-specialties including breaching, drone operations, and advanced marksmanship.
  •

De-Escalation & Professionalism

While the SWAT team is equipped for high-intensity situations, their most valuable tool is their training in controlled response. By providing a highly disciplined presence, the team often influences a suspect to surrender peacefully, significantly reducing the likelihood of injuries to suspects, officers, or bystanders.
