Crime Analysis Unit

Crime Analysis Unit

The Crime Analysis Unit is the intelligence hub of the Investigations Division. In a modern police department, data is just as important as physical evidence. Our analysts move beyond simply counting crimes; they look for the "who, what, when, where, and why" to help our department stay ahead of criminal trends and deploy our resources where they will have the greatest impact.

Data-Driven Policing

Crime analysis is the process of identifying patterns and relationships in criminal data. By synthesizing information from various sources—including incident reports, the Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC), and regional intelligence—our analysts provide the strategic insights necessary for "precision policing." This ensures that our officers are not just responding to crime, but actively working to prevent it.

Core Functions Include:

  • Tactical Analysis: Identifying immediate patterns, such as a "spikes" in specific crimes (like auto burglaries or retail theft) in a particular neighborhood. This allows for rapid deployment of patrol and detective resources.
  • Strategic Analysis: Monitoring long-term trends to help department leadership evaluate the effectiveness of our programs and plan for future growth and resource allocation.
  • Administrative Analysis: Providing the data and mapping necessary for city leaders and community partners to understand the safety landscape of Farmington.
  • Intelligence Support: Assisting detectives by linking cases through common suspect descriptions, vehicle patterns, or methods of operation (Modus Operandi).

Mapping and Visualization

One of the most powerful tools in our unit is Geospatial Mapping. By visualizing crime data on a map of the city, we can identify "hot spots" and track the movement of criminal activity across Farmington. This visual data is shared with our patrol shifts and specialized units, providing them with a clear, actionable picture of their beat before they even start their shift.

A Force Multiplier

The Crime Analysis Unit serves as a "force multiplier" for the entire department. By providing accurate, timely, and relevant information, they allow our officers to work smarter. Whether it’s helping a detective connect a series of unrelated cases or helping the RTCC focus its monitoring on high-activity areas, crime analysis is essential to the modern mission of the Farmington Police Department.
