Investigations Division

The Investigations Division is the investigative heart of the Farmington Police Department. While our Patrol Division provides the immediate response to calls for service, the Investigations Division provides the specialized, in-depth focus required to solve complex crimes, process forensic evidence, and support victims through the judicial process.

Overseen by the Investigations Lieutenant, this division is a multi-disciplinary team of sworn officers and professional civilian staff dedicated to uncovering the truth and holding offenders accountable.

The Investigative Process

Most cases begin with a report taken by a Patrol Officer. If a case involves a felony or a complex misdemeanor requiring extensive follow-up, it is transitioned to the Investigations Division. Our personnel then utilize a variety of advanced techniques—from digital forensics to traditional interview methods—to build comprehensive cases for the District Attorney’s Office.

A Specialized Ecosystem

To provide the highest level of service to Farmington, the Investigations Division is composed of five distinct flyout units that work in constant coordination:

• Detective Unit: Our detectives are highly skilled generalists capable of investigating a wide array of crimes. They handle the "heavy lifting" of criminal cases, including evidence review, suspect interrogation, and search warrant execution.
• Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) & Crime Lab: The scientific arm of the department, responsible for the meticulous collection and preservation of physical evidence.
• School Resource Officers (SROs): Sworn officers embedded within our schools to provide safety, mentorship, and a proactive law enforcement presence for students and faculty.
• Crime Analysis: The intelligence hub of the department, identifying patterns and trends to help us deploy resources where they are needed most.
• Victim Advocacy: A compassionate support system that helps victims and their families navigate the aftermath of a crime and the complexities of the legal system.
