Victim Advocates

The Victim Advocacy Unit represents the compassionate heart of the Farmington Police Department. While detectives and CSI focus on the technical and legal aspects of a crime, our advocates focus entirely on the people affected by it. We recognize that navigating the aftermath of a traumatic event can be overwhelming, and our mission is to ensure that no victim has to walk that path alone.


Compassionate Support in Times of Crisis

Victim Advocates are professional staff members trained in crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, and the complexities of the legal system. They provide a bridge between the police department and the community, offering a safe and supportive environment for victims and their families to find their footing.


Core Services Include:


  • Crisis Intervention: Providing immediate emotional support and stabilization following a traumatic incident.
  • Case Status Updates: Helping victims stay informed as their case moves through the Investigations Division and into the court system.
  • Safety Planning: Working one-on-one with individuals—particularly in cases of domestic violence or stalking—to develop personalized plans for their physical and emotional safety.
  • Resource Referral: Connecting victims with essential community resources, including emergency shelter, counseling, legal aid, and medical services.

Navigating the Legal System

For many, the criminal justice system can feel like a foreign language. Our advocates serve as expert guides, ensuring that victims understand their rights and the legal process.


  • Court Advocacy: Explaining the various stages of a criminal case, from the initial filing of charges to final sentencing.
  • Protection Orders: Assisting victims with the process of petitioning for Orders of Protection or Restraining Orders.
  • Victim Impact Statements: Helping individuals find their voice by assisting with the preparation of statements for the court.
  • Compensation Assistance: Helping eligible victims apply for the New Mexico Crime Victims Reparation Commission to assist with medical bills, lost wages, or funeral expenses.

Empowerment Through Advocacy

The Victim Advocacy Unit is dedicated to restoring a sense of control to those who have been victimized. By providing clear information and emotional backup, we empower residents to move from "victim" to "survivor." Our services are confidential, free of charge, and available regardless of whether an arrest has been made.
