Special Operations
The Farmington Police Department’s Special Operations units are made up of the SWAT Team, Negotiator Team, and Bomb Squad. These units represent the department’s highest level of technical readiness and specialized response. While these teams utilize state-of-the-art equipment and modern tactics, their core mission remains rooted in service: providing a safe resolution to the most challenging situations our community faces.
A Commitment Beyond the Call
Each member of these teams serves on a collateral-duty basis, meaning they maintain their primary full-time roles in Patrol, Investigations, Administration, or other areas of the department while dedicating themselves to these specialties. To maintain an elite level of readiness, team members undergo hundreds of hours of rigorous training every year. This structure ensures that the advanced skills developed in Special Operations are integrated into every level of our department’s daily operations.
Integrated Tactical Response
The SWAT Team and Negotiator Team work as a unified force to resolve high-risk incidents, such as barricaded subjects or rescue operations. Our Negotiators are experts in de-escalation, using communication to protect lives and reach peaceful outcomes. When a tactical presence is required, the SWAT Team employs precision and advanced technology to ensure the safety of the public and our officers. Together, their goal is always the same: the preservation of life through professional restraint and tactical excellence.
Regional Expertise: The Bomb Squad
The Farmington Police Department Bomb Squad is a premier regional asset, providing specialized hazardous device services throughout the Four Corners area. As an FBI-certified unit, the Bomb Squad is equipped with cutting-edge robotics and diagnostic tools to manage explosive threats. Beyond their regional mission, the Bomb Squad provides essential technical support to the SWAT and Negotiator teams during high-risk callouts, ensuring that our tactical responses are supported by the best technology and safety protocols available.
